I stop after picking up the phone, I wait to see if anyone is saying anything. After 5-7 seconds I say "Hello", then the phone hangs up and I hang up or someone say's "Hello Pat how are you?" I say "Who is this?" They tell me and I hang up. Or they say "Your car warranty is just about to run out, would you like to extend it?" and I hang up. A least 1 call a week. If I had their home Phone # I would call at 2 am. and ask the wife "Is the coast was clear".
